I don't think Marilynn knew about this amazing weather when she created this card sometime last week! One would think that this card would be entirely appropriate for the beginning of February, but here we are.... We're shadowing with Copic markers and doing a wee bit of paper piecing on the scarf. Cute!

Simple Elegance

For this week's Technique Tag Tuesday, we'll be playing with the LaBlanche stamps. You may have seen these in the shop and not even realized it. They look like they are packaged in a white box, but in fact, that is how the stamp is mounted. They are unlike any stamp you've used before, and they stamp fine details just beautifully! We stamped this image on patterned paper and then colored with Prismacolor pencils, which are very opaque and allow the image to really pop! This fall, we added the Stamps by Judith line of stamps to our offerings, and we've been having a ball ever since! Her collection can be used to create all kinds of scenes - the stamps are very versatile. Join us this Thursday between 10 and 8 to make this all-occasion card. The balloon is a separate image, so you can really change the "mood" of your bear simply by using a different stamp in place of the balloon. We'll also be adding some texture and dimension to the bear with flocking. If you've not worked with flocking before, be sure to stop in so you can see how easy it is!

We've shown you how to use the Fringe Scissors to create 3-D flowers, but you can also use them for much simpler projects, like creating faux grass. We are starting to unpack all the boxes that piled up in the week we were closed. It's like Christmas all over again! Today, I had the pleasure of opening the new Lockhart stamps (and fabulous card samples). You simply must come in and see the "couch card" in person. Karen used tiny straight pins for the knitting needles in the basket of yarn - perfect! We will continue the unpacking process all weekend, and into the following week. And, don't forget, at our Open House on January 21, we will be unveiling two new companies that we have never carried before in the shop. Rushing around with my last minute "stuff", I realized I never posted this week's card. Sorry about that! I'm especially sorry because it is a stunner! Marilynn is the queen of Stampscapes, and this card features their country church image. If you've been intimidated to try Stampscapes before, this is a great chance because you're just using the single image. The fun is in the coloring! Shimmer and Shine

I'm having so much fun with the Shimmer Sheetz! These are high quality, fabric safe mylar sheets and have dozens of uses. You can punch them or cut them with any dies that are not wafer thin (wafer thin dies won't cut them, but will emboss them - kind of a cool effect). And they emboss beautifully with any folder! The sheets come in a handful of colors, but you can also stain them with alcohol inks and the shimmer still shines through! We've had a lot of fun with the Sew Easy products from We R Memory keepers - so we were excited to try their latest product: Sew Ribbon! Like the Sew Easy, which creates holes for sewing thread in a variety of shapes and designs, the Sew Ribbon creates unique patterns for sewing 1/4" ribbon. No disguise!

Maybe because it's just past Halloween, but when I think of masks - well, I think of disguises. And, in a way, that's what masking is. It's a trick of perspective - you stamp things first that you want to appear on top, then you hide that image (or mask it) while you stamp over the top the images that you want to appear in the back. Magic! If it sounds complicated, it is a little hard to describe. But it's actually quite easy to do - especially with Eclipse masking tape! Their cards usually feature whimsical animals and critters, so we were quite surprised and delighted with November's change of pace. Each of these cards features a scripture and a lovely image to compliment it. This week's FREE make-and-take card is very difficult to photograph well. The reflection of the Black Glossy paper (even with the flash off) hides the subtle metallic shimmer we created with Marvy Metallic pens. The accents we added with Distress Stickles so exactly match the notecard color that it almost appears we punched lacy holes - but this is much easier than that! And, notice how the Extra Giga Scalloped Oval punch is framed perfectly by the background stamp by Flourishes. It's like everyone just played nice together, even though there are 6 different companies represented in this card. I LOVE it when a plan comes together! We had a great time on a Tuesday back in February with the fabulous Goosebumps spray from Tsukineko. This product creates an interesting texture on any porous surface. Tsukineko has expanded the Goosebumps line with a new Shimmer Goosebumps (and Goosebumps Matte in in the works). We just loves these Tubes from SRM! We used the larger size at the Anniversary Open House to make a fabulous organizer for beads, brads and buttons. But we also have them in mini sizes (see picture) and even in a Magic Wand size! They are the perfect way for packaging up little treats for your favorite ghosts and goblins! SRM also makes clear stickers that are perfect for decorating clear projects - tubes, acrylic minibooks, or even on mirrors! Hooray! The sun came out! It was feeling much more like spring than like fall with all of this rain. So, to help get you in the proper fall mood, join us Thursday for our FREE card make-and-take. Marilynn used this adorable stamp set from American Crafts and lots of luscious fall colors to create this all-occasion card. Instead of using an extra green layer for the grass, she masked off part of the card stock and used a direct-to-paper technique. She added lots of elegant touches with a button and baker's twine. This card just makes me happy looking at it. Imagine how much fun it will be to make, send and receive! Oh happy day indeed!

Metallic Magic

We have a pretty large selection of metallic papers that add sparkle and shimmer to your projects. Sometimes people ask us for suggestions on how to use them. Stamping on them can be a bit tricky (unless you use StazOn and great care), and layering with them can be boring (and expensive). But with all of the fabulous dies from Hero Arts, Memory Box, Sizzix and others, the metallic paper can become the focal point of your card! This Thursday's FREE make-and-take features glasses cut from metallic paper using our Accu-Cut machine. The stamp from Verses makes this the perfect wedding or congratulations card! Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?

I just got home from back-to-school night for my 5th grader, and I'm fairly confident I'm not :-) Wow! These teachers are incredible, so I was excited to see this Thursday's FREE make-and-take card. It will be perfect to send to her and show her a little "love". This card features two sets from the Oxford collection of stamps from Hero Arts (you probably know by now that Hero Arts has teamed up with Basic Grey to create stamps that coordinate beautifully with their paper collections). These stamps would work perfectly for school scrapbooks, too! Basic Grey is not the only company Hero Arts has teamed up with either. They have just released stamps and coordinating embossing folders and dies in partnership with Sizzix. And guess what? We got them in the shop TODAY! Jenn will be demoing the dies on Tuesday, so stay tuned for more info on that as well!

It's a Breeze!

This week's card will "blow you away". You will have some fun playing with the new Fiskars border punch featuring the fence motif. This punch lends itself to all kinds of projects! The stamps are from the Snag 'em collection by Imaginisce which means they are only $1 each. They stamp beautifully! You'll also get to play with the Faber-Castell Big Brush Markers. These markers are different from Copics (which are alcohol inks) and Memento/Tombo markers (which are water-based) in that they are India Ink markers. They are a very wet ink that dries permanently, but they don't bleed through to the back of your card stock. Therefore, this card doesn't require any layering pieces - hooray! Thanks to everyone who joined us for our 8th Anniversary Open House on Saturday! We had a blast! As you know, we like to introduce you to new companies, and this year was no exception. We had a huge selection of stamps from Vippies! This company designs whimsical stamps for every occasion! If you like Rosie's Roadshow, you'll like Vippies, too! We also brought in virtually every clear stamp set that Flourishes makes. Their designs are more elegant, and they are great for coloring! Open House feels a little bit like a family reunion. It's so great to catch up with friends we've made over the past 8 years! And, because the staff works such different shifts, it's nice for all of us to be together as well. Fun and friendship!

One of my favorite ways to completely change the way a stamped image looks is to stamp it on decorative paper. It "grounds" the image so that it doesn't appear to be just floating in space. It makes for a quick card because you don't have to worry about background shading, and it's also a great way to make use of your scraps of decorative paper. No Cause for Distress

These stains are so easy to use - they're premixed and come in a convenient dauber top bottle to make color washes a breeze! And, of course, they come in the coordinating colors of the Distressed line of products. Now, you may be thinking - why can't I just use the direct-to-paper technique with my Distress Ink Pads and achieve the same look. The answer is: it's impossible with an ink pad. Earthquakes and Excitement

Well, today was a very exciting day for Northern Virginia. First, there was a large Earthquake that many of us were not expecting. Second, there were all kinds of new additions to the store.

Many of you requested that we carry the very trendy baker's twine by the yard. Well, your wish is our command! Now we carry all 12 colors of Divine Twine Baker's Twine. At only 20 cents a yard, it is a very affordable addition to your crafting projects!

Have you ever knocked things off of our shelves while shopping? Well, the earthquake threw a lot of supplies off of our shelves! The good news is that it prompted us to straighten, move items, and generally revamp the store. I want to walk you through some of the changes.

First, Marilynn worked very hard to clean up the back wall. She straightened everything and organized all of our new samples from Lockhart and Rosie's Roadshow to make it easy to find all of the new products. Doesn't it look great?!

Dee fixed the area with all of the new Claudine Hellmuth supplies as well as the Tsukineko Fireworks sprays and the Tim Holtz Distress Stains:

Hare moved all of the Faber-Castell supplies over to the space that used to be occupied by the Staz-On pads:

Ready to start stamping for fall? Be sure to check out the paper rack by the door. It is loaded with Fall-themed papers by Imaginice. The candy apple paper is especially delicious!

Speaking of seasonal stamping, are you ready to start thinking of the holidays? We moved many of the new CHA holiday items together next to the door. I think the new supplies will definitely inspire you!

Hero Arts has all kinds of new goodies, and we have ordered EVERYTHING! They are gradually shipping us all of the new supplies, but you can see that we already have many of the new Halloween and holiday stamps. We can't wait until the new dies arrive! If there is anything in particular that you want, be sure to let us know, and we will be happy to hold it for you the second that it arrives. The only hard part will be choosing from all the new goodies:

Whenever we have blank spots in the store, it always makes people nervous. Don't worry, though since we are expecting all kinds of new products. Here is a picture of the space we are reserving for new supplies:

Sometimes, when I'm in a rut, I'll see a stamp and wonder how I'm going to make that work on an A-2 size card. Seriously? Who made the rule that all cards have to be A-2 sized? And if there were such a rule, who's going to enforce it? The Post Office simply insists that a card fits into an envelope, so enjoy the freedom to change things up a bit! This cute little card fits into an A-2 envelope and features one of the new stamps from Hero Arts. Combo Card!

That Marilynn! She's very crafty - and by that I mean "sly". This stamp, by Magenta, features an open vase. There are a couple of ways to create a pattern on an open image. One is to stamp on patterned paper. But what if your patterned paper is the wrong color? Or the wrong pattern? Or so fantastic that you can't bear to stamp on it and cut it up (which is the problem I have all the time, but I digress). What Marilynn chose to do was combine the stamp with a stencil. She used a brass stencil and markers to create the stripes on the vase. She then used the same markers, direct-to-rubber, to color and stamp the image so that everything matches perfectly. Easy, pretty and yet another way to use items in a new way. Crafty, right???!!! Stop by and make this card on Thursday between 10 - 8. It's FREE!

It's Bow Easy!

I think I was probably in kindergarten when I discovered how difficult it is to tie a neat bow. (And 1000 years ago, we didn't have velcro shoes, so ugly bows were the only option!) I have since learned how to make "bunny ears" and then adjust, adjust, adjust. The problem with that technique is that it wastes an enormous amount of ribbon, so if you're going to be making multiple bows, that is not a great option. Thankfully, there is a great little template that assists in making perfect bows in a variety of sizes, and it wastes NO ribbon! Stop in Tuesday between 12 & 2 and let Jenn show you how to use it. Do you have a Smartphone? We have started putting QR codes like the one above next to various products in the store. All you have to do is make sure you have an app that scans QR codes and then have your phone read the code on the wall. We received tons of the new Ranger Distress Stains. Here is Ranger's description on the stains:

Distress Stains are fluid water-based dyes for papers and other porous
surfaces. Use for quick and easy ink coverage for backgrounds and larger areas.
Mist with water to lighten color and create mottled effects. Apply layers of
stain to achieve more saturated color. Available in the entire Distress color
palette.

The brushed nylon dabber top has a built-in spring valve. This
allows for controlling the release of Distress Stains from the bottle. By
pressing the dabber top down onto surface, the valve opens and fluid releases.
Lift dabber away from surface to stop fluid flow. Spread Distress Stains by
swiping the dabber top lightly as a brush across the surface.

It has been so hot this summer, that every little bit of moving air is a welcome mini vacation. If you feel the same way, you are going to love this week's Technique Tuesday Tag. Jenn will be showing you tips for working with the Copic Air Brush! If you have followed this blog much at all, you know I'm a big fan of finding multiple uses for products. I love how vibrant Copic markers are when you color with them. But look at how soft - almost chalk-like - they are when you spray them on. Lovely! And yet, it's the same marker/same ink. Incredible! Plus, it makes it so much easier to apply color to things that are not flat and smooth - like this flower. Stop by between 12 and 2 and take a little mini vacation with us!

Next, we have signed up for the Inky Antics board of the month program. For this month, they sent us a cute board dedicated to their Honey Pop cards. If you aren't familiar with these cards, you combine stamped images with honeycomb paper to create 3-D cards. Here are the samples from the outside:

Several of my friends are expecting babies soon. Poor things - what a hot and horrible summer to be pregnant! YIKES! This week's free make-and-take card would be a perfect new baby card or child's birthday card. Customize the gender easily by changing the color of the decorative paper scraps you use. (And this is a fabulous way to use up scraps - simply punch with a square punch)! I love the addition of the rickrack ribbon. Wouldn't it be great if you could hit that "x" every time? One of the hardest things to do, especially with a wood mounted stamp, is put your image exactly where you want it. I have trouble with words sloping up or downhill (and sometimes it's not even my fault depending on how the stamp was mounted). Wouldn't it be great if you didn't get enough ink on your stamp that you could just stamp right back over the top of your image and fix it? Impression Obsession Sneak Peek

Bloomin' Great Day!

There is a lot going on in this FREE make-and-take card. Marilynn used the Stacy Stamps triangle background stamp on craft paper to create a lovely background. Sometimes when you see a background stamp with this much detail, it looks like "too much work". But this is super quick and easy and really highlights the zinnia stamp in the center. I love the extra touch of using Flower Soft in the center of the flower, and I love the highlights Marilynn created with a white colored pencil. We ignore our white pencils too often, I think. Finally, Marilynn used a piece of the new accent tape to adhere the greeting. These tapes come in several vintage colors and are a funky way to "grunge" up your projects. Fireworks sprays (by Tsukineko) are an acid-free product that comes in 24 colors to match the Memento ink pads and markers. Unlike the dye pads, which are matte, these sprays shimmer and shine! Marilynn created this lovely thank you card by stamping on top of patterned paper to make the perfect background for the Cocoa Bean butterfly. Memory Box released a series of animal stamps that could be used for baby or "kid-related" cards and projects. This giraffe is from that series of stamps, but I think it could be used for much more than that! Particularly when paired with this balloon - it makes a wonderful "happy birthday" card. What I thought of (which is not necessarily a "card occasion") is how handy a giraffe would be to have around when the balloon gets away. They can reach so much higher than I can. All Purpose Card

In honor of Mitra's visit Thursday evening, our FREE Thursday make-and-take features this stunning image from Impression Obsession (Mitra is the owner of I.O.). The image covers the entire front of the card, and you can stamp any message inside - making this the great "need to send a card quick" card to have on hand! Some people get scared by a stamp with this much detail, but actually it's easy to use and wonderfully versatile! Marilynn's design evokes old-fashioned photography, where the image was black and white and then lightly hand-tinted in select places. We're achieving that same effect with colored pencils - effective and quick! Check out Marilynn's other samples while you're in the shop - she's done a beautiful card with this stamp and Copics & Flower Soft!

Another New Marker?

I think what I've learned after so many years in this hobby, is that there are always more tools you need to help you get the job done right! I LOVE my Memento Markers and my Copic markers, but now I also LOVE the Big Brush markers from Faber-Castell. What's the difference? Mementos are water-based and match the Memento ink pads (handy for filling in stamping boo-boos). Copics are alcohol ink markers and will dry on everything! Big Brush markers are India Ink - almost like a hybrid marker! They are wet enough to do "direct-to-rubber" yet dry permanently! And, they don't bleed through the paper like Copics do. My favorite things about them is their nib. It's kind of a "hard brush", so you don't have to be dainty when you use it and it stays nice and firm. Stop in Tuesday between 12-2 and see why I'm convinced you'll need "another new marker"!!!!

Summer Travels!

Wish someone "bon voyage" or share remembrances of your summer vacation with this fabulous FREE make-and-take card featuring a stamp set from The Paper Company. I absolutely LOVE Marilynn's color combination for this card. The technique is kind of the opposite of the popular "popping pastels". Instead of stamping the images first and coloring with chalk, Marilynn created the background color wash first (with chalk) and then stamped over the top. We love the Smooch paints by Clearsnap, and they recently unveiled a bunch of new "must have" colors! If you've never worked with Smooch before, you're in for a treat. First of all, their packaging (they look like little nail polish bottles) is irresistible! And the fine tip makes them very easy to apply, even in very small spaces. These highly metallic paints dry on virtually everything! I use them to paint my metal charms. One of my favorite products from the most recent trade show I attended is Ultrafine GLITTER from Elizabeth Crafts. That's right - I said glitter! And you'll see why if you join Jenn for our Technique Tag Tuesday tomorrow from 12-2. This is the only glitter I've ever seen that stays put! It literally won't rub off on your fingers once you've adhered it to your project! It's also incredibly shiny! We'll also be playing with their white-core Shimmer Sheetz! And, I love how Jenn changed it up with the tags this week - instead of a typical shipping tag shape, Jenn cut these tags using a Tim Holtz Sizzix die. So, stop in and see what we're up to!

This card features new products from Canvas Corp. As accents, we used their adhesive-backed cork circles and a piece of hemp. They added the perfect touches to this flowerful card! We used "open" flower stamps from Hero Arts and stamped on yellow polka-dotted paper - no coloring required! Quick and easy - fun and cheery! The perfect all-occasion greeting! Rockin' the Ribbon!

We pride ourselves on how much ribbon we carry in the shop. But even if we had NOTHING but ribbon, we still wouldn't have every color you need for every project. Here's the good news - you can dye your ribbon using your Copic markers. Join Jenn this Tuesday to find out more! In this tag sample, she used the Copic markers to dye the silver metallic leaf ribbon, ric rac and even felty-lace (to create the flowers). How freeing is that? Use ribbon to your heart's content and always have the right color. It's like magic!

With all the rain we've had lately, the flowers should be as spectacular as this one from Hero Arts! And, it was created with water, too! Marilynn used Water-based markers to color the image directly on the stamp. After stamping the image, she then used a reservoir brush to color over the stamped image to pull color away from the outlines and into the open spaces. The final product looks like a watercolor painting, and it is so easy! Stop in this Thursday to make one for yourself!

I LOVE Twinkling H2Os. They are a highly metallic watercolor paint and they are very versatile! You can use them on light or dark colored card stocks, and you can paint with them, or apply them directly to your stamps and stamp with them. But my favorite things about them is the shine! It's Flower Time!

I love the flower embellishments - especially the white ones that I can color to perfectly match my projects! In Thursday's FREE make-and-take, we are using the new Tim Holtz Distress Stains to color the flower and adding additional interest by stamping on it as well! Pretty! The piece that the words are stamped on was created using our Accu Cut machine and dies. If you've never used this handy machine before, be sure to ask us how next time you're in the shop!

You Can't Resist!

Ugh! I think I have taken the title from my high school band director as the worst pun maker ever! Sorry to inflict that on you all! Anyway, it's quite EASY to create resists using this new embossed chipboard from Bazzill. (It comes in several different designs, so come check them out). Join Jenn tomorrow between 12 and 2 and play - she used Adirondack Color Wash sprays, but you could use virtually anything to create beautiful resist effects - and the best part is the work is already done for you! Fun and easy!

Faber-Castell

Next time you see Marilynn in the shop, be sure to give her an "atta boy"! She has been creating our weekly make-and-take cards for almost 8 years now. Can you even imagine that? Sometimes, it's all I can do to create one card - especially when there's a deadline! Well done, Marilynn!!!!

I particularly love this week's card. Marilynn created the soft cloud background using the cloud template from Printworks. Simply sponge color around the template - it really is that easy! She used the Accu-cut to create the birdhouse (again using leftover scraps of paper - love it!) and created the branch with the Fiskars Limited Edition branch punch (which she punched twice to make the perfect length). Simple and a thing of beauty. Stop in Thursday to make one for yourself!

Suede Effects with Paper Soft

We love the paper crafting products from Viva Decor. We've shared techniques for working with their Pearl Pens, Glass Effect Pens and Glitter Liners in previous demos. Now you need to see their latest offering! Paper Soft is a unique dye that can be used in multiple ways. At the top of the tag, Jenn applied the product in a vertical motion, creating the appearance of wood. At the bottom, she used a circular motion, and it really looks like suede! She also used it directly on stamps in a couple of different ways - on the swirl using an application of Versamark first to create a 1-step resist, and directly on the stamp for the words. Don't you just love products you can use in a variety of ways??? Paper Soft comes in a nice selection of colors, so come try the latest and greatest - tomorrow between 12-2!

The Perfect Pair!

One of the huge delights of "buying" for the shop is when I find the perfect phrase to compliment an image. Especially when they come from two entirely different companies. It's like winning a scavenger hunt! The shoe images are from Hero Arts, and we just found the phrase while attending the trade show. It's from Printworks. See what I mean about the perfect "pair"? Marilynn used the same focal images (the shoes) to create a subtle background. Why don't I remember to do that? It's a great tip! She then stamped the images on decorative paper (a great way to use up scraps and add interest) and punched them out to create this bright and festive card! Stop in Thursday to make one for yourself. Layering StazOn

Introducing yet another new product from Tsukineko - GlazOn! StazOn is a wonderful solvent ink that dries on virtually any surface, making it the perfect medium for coloring on tiles, glass or metal. However, if you try to layer colors, sometimes you will get a muddy appearance. That problem has been solved with this new addition to the StazOn family - GlazOn! Simply apply your first layer of StazOn ink and let dry (or heat set). Then apply a thin layer of GlazOn - the thinner the better - and let that dry. Then apply your next layer of StazOn. Colors stay true and crisp! And, GlazOn can also be used for collage work - it will hold small charms and beads to your project as well. Also, use it as a sealant for your finished work. Ribbon to "dye" for!

We just received a new shipment of ribbon from May Arts! I'm not sure which addiction is worse - paper or ribbon! YIKES! One of the fun new designs is this pretty tulip - it comes in purple and pink (the original colors are the purple tulip on the left and the pink tulip in the center). To add interest, I used a Copic marker to color the stem and leaves green. I used a darker purple Copic to color the tulip on the right and a yellow Copic (on top of the pink) to create the two orange flowers! I created the grass border with the Fiskars Grass Border punch, then nested the flowers behind it with mini glue dots. Isn't the lace ribbon stunning? It's also new and looks great on its own. But to add some contrast to the card, I wove one of the new 1/8" stitched ribbons through it. Pretty and spring-like! In addition to all of the ribbons shown here, we received other colors of the stitched 1/8" ribbon and fabulous 1/8" velvet ribbons (which look fabulous woven through the lace as well). Bright and Sunny!

While that may not be the forecast, it is always what you'll find inside our doors! This Thursday, in particular, Marilynn has created a card that will put a smile all over your face! I love the "kool-aid" colors she chose. She employed a technique called paper piecing. Usually when I think of paper piecing, I think of using patterned paper. But she had so many details going on with the buttons, that patterned paper would have detracted, I think. Instead, she used it to set off the phrase. Nice touch! All of these stamps come from one convenient Lawn Fawn clear set - and it has a bunch of other good stamps on there as well. I've Got Goosebumps!

Join Angela this Tuesday from 12-2 to play with the very latest product from Tsukineko - GooseBumps! GooseBumps is a clear "texture" spray that allows you to add unique textures on almost any surface (think paper, canvas, acrylic, acetate and many other surfaces)! It's very difficult to capture this cool effect in a picture, so you absolutely must stop by and check it out. Simply spritz a coat over your finished project and watch the goosebumps rise! The more you spray, the thicker and more dramatic the effect (and the longer the drying time, so keep that in mind). We hope to see you Tuesday so you can experiment for yourself!
